Day 31 – Anzac Day

Guess what I spent a few hours doing today?

I also spent a few hours writing a travel blog post. I am really far behind in the ‘explore’ section on this blog.. just now writing about Jordan which is where we were in November! Oh well.. better late than never. Each post takes me hours as I trawl through my photos to choose the good ones (there are so many!) and look up details on places that we visited and things we saw. But I want to do it because it’s really good for me to have a record of where we went and what we did… so I shall persevere!

It was a warm sunny day again today so I got outside for a bit to clear some weeds (to give to the chooks) and also harvested a few things in the garden. These are the last of the zucchinis but I still have lots of tomatoes. They must have gone in late as they have only just ripened in the last couple of weeks.

Most days we have a visitor in the garden. Luna from next door… she is very shy though so there’s no chance for a pat… she just runs away if we get anywhere near her. She likes to sit in the garden in the sun, sometimes walks on our paving, under our table and sometimes says hello to the chickens. This is as close as I can get to her before she runs away. Unfortunately this is not close enough for you to see her cool eyes – one is blue and one is green!

It is Anzac Day today and I did have thoughts of getting up at 6am and standing at dawn at the letterbox, but Ants wasn’t keen and so in the end I didn’t set the alarm and woke up just after 7. I had a lazy couple of hours in bed reading a new book (Occupy Money) and read some online stuff about economics… as you do on a Saturday morning! Antony spent the day working but as usual is having tomorrow off… it’s our gardening, cleaning & washing day.

I have never made biscuits but thought I might give Anzac biscuits a whirl today. But then the puzzle caught me in its addictive web and I didn’t quite make it to the kitchen, maybe tomorrow. The only thing I did do in the kitchen was try a new recipe for dinner. ‘Red cabbage braise’ was yummy and a really nice accompaniment to the shepherd’s pie I made last night (also a new recipe for that one).

That was it for me this Anzac Day… I did love seeing things on social media that friends and family had posted to commemorate this special day. One did an online Anzac service in te reo, another played the last post outside her house for the first time, some have posted tributes to family members who served, my uncle decked out his old school jeep with a big poppy and had it out on the street so a neighbour could stand in front of it to play the last post when they had their street service. Lots of people have done Anzac related crafts and decorated their footpaths and fences and paddocks with poppies and ‘Lest we forget’ signs. Really rather special. Good on everyone who stood at their letterboxes or on their balconies at dawn to remember.

About the Author

Born and bred in New Zealand's South Island, this Kiwi likes getting 'out there' exploring the world and its wonderful people! I have taught English in South Korea, volunteered in Kyrgyzstan, studied in Denmark, lived in community in Scotland and visited friends and wonderful people all over the world. Now married to Antony the adventures continue together. I have a habit of being notoriously behind in my blog - but will do what I can to record my adventures, as much for my own record as anything (as I have a terrible memory). After an amazing year in Iran and Europe, in 2016, Antony and I are off again September 29 2019 - Feb 1 2020. Hopefully I can blog about most of what we get up to! Enjoy the read! Kate x
