Day 16 – Transformation

It’s Friday – Good Friday – and what a good day it was – a really stunning sunny day from beginning to end! It says it was 21 degrees but it felt hotter than that to me…

Given it was a public holiday, Antony and I had a break from our work and spent the day emptying, cleaning and rearranging the entire garage and the garden shed. Not as fun as being with our friends on the Crown Range which is where we were meant to be for Easter… but hey, it felt really good to get things organised.

Here’s some ‘before’ pictures of the garage – I’d already taken lawnmower and bikes out before the before pic – they would have been in the bottom right pic.

Here’s the ‘In process’ pics… of us sweeping and vacuuming in the garage. The pic on the left is of all the paint tins we took out to wipe down (super dirty some of them) before we put them in our old bookshelf which is now in the garage. This is a MUCH better place for them than all along the floor where they were.

And the garage ‘after’ pics… Some things we are storing we hope to pass on to others after lockdown (like all the windows that came out when we renovated our sun-room/ lounge last year). There is also still a section by the freezer to sort out (box on floor and stuff on the shelves)… but I ran out of steam about 4.30pm today so will do it tomorrow! Already it feels so much cleaner, brighter and bigger. A definite transformation of the space.

The Garden Shed was next… you could hardly set foot in here as there was stuff completely covering the rotting floorboards. Here are some before pics:

Antony got most of the stuff out and on the lawn for us to organise. I spent quite some time organising the gazillion garden pots, it was like tetris trying to make them fit inside each other. I have no idea where they even came from, I hardly ever buy plants in pots! But like the bags of small yoghurt and margarine pottles we found in a bag in the garage, some things I think were here before we got here or maybe moved in when we were away for a year…. a clean out was definitely overdue! As we removed everything from the garden shed it exposed the rotting floor and big holes where the mice get in. Eek.

We used some wood leftover bits from the house reno to put on the floor which worked to cover the big holes, yay! And all the plant pots were sorted neatly into a big plastic bin which we put in the garage.

Here are the ‘after’ photos of the garden shed. The transformation is quite radical …we can actually see the floor and walk around inside! The whole right side of the shed is now empty – which means when we get firewood we can stack it in here, ready for next year. Wood for this year is already stacked in the car port. Left side has the chook food (white sacks in the white bin) and all the garden related things are more accessible now. Still some things in here that we need to find a use for – like the old milk cans I love but don’t quite know what to do with!

I had a headache most of the day- even though I was drinking lots of water… maybe the sun, it was pretty bright. It’s 11pm now and I still have the headache…. I blame that for the complete brain fade I had during an online bridge game with some friends tonight!

It was a mammoth mission today … so I felt the need for a little reward. I made the autumn spice pear cobbler again for dessert… so good!

Tomorrow we tackle the garden!

About the Author

Born and bred in New Zealand's South Island, this Kiwi likes getting 'out there' exploring the world and its wonderful people! I have taught English in South Korea, volunteered in Kyrgyzstan, studied in Denmark, lived in community in Scotland and visited friends and wonderful people all over the world. Now married to Antony the adventures continue together. I have a habit of being notoriously behind in my blog - but will do what I can to record my adventures, as much for my own record as anything (as I have a terrible memory). After an amazing year in Iran and Europe, in 2016, Antony and I are off again September 29 2019 - Feb 1 2020. Hopefully I can blog about most of what we get up to! Enjoy the read! Kate x
