Vegetarian food

Day 37

Just a quick update as I have a bridge tournament starting soon… I said yesterday I was going to have stuffed marrow for dinner… was quite excited about trying my new recipe. I made the ‘stuffing’ part and then Antony sliced open the marrow… only to discover there was no big seedy middle bit to take out where the stuffing should go! He took out a very small seedy bit at one end- would have fit about a tablespoon of filling in it! So […]

Day 34 – Lockdown Level 3 begins

So today we moved to Level 3 of New Zealand’s Covid 19 alert level system. It’s still heavily restricted- I won’t have any social contact with anyone except Antony but was able to see my colleagues today – keeping our 1m distance at our staff meeting. I wasn’t sure if I’d keep blogging in Level 3 but felt like a quick update from today… so here you go. 3.19am – woke up before my alarm and thought that’s good.. until I saw the time! […]

Day 33: Last day of Level 4 Lockdown!

If you missed Day 32 it was because I didn’t post a lockdown update yesterday! Instead I published this post about Wadi Rum, one of the highlights of our time in Jordan last November. Please read it and be amazed at these wonderful places on our planet! My travel posts take me many, many hours to write. I have so many amazing experiences and photos from each place that it is hard to choose what makes it to the blog and what to leave […]

Day 29

A cloudy day! That makes news…. it’s a first in ages. I had to put the heat pump on during the day which I haven’t needed to do most of lock-down. I didn’t even venture outdoors today. I did get a high intensity interval training session done first thing but the rest of the day was very stationary! The day was a busy one on the computer with a couple of zoom calls for both jobs. I had a zoom call with Māori students […]

Day 25 – Quiz time

The first Zoom Quiz I’ve been involved in went pretty well! We had 25 people in 7 teams and managed to get through the set up, 7 rounds of questions and answers and results in 2 hours… bit longer than planned but good fun. As the Quiz Master I emailed everyone a PDF with the questions each round – discovering only after it was all over that Antony didn’t get them… he’d been missed off the list but didn’t mention it to me til […]

Day 24

Bit of an Asian theme to the last couple of meals… Last night I made bibimbap – a typical Korean dish with rice, vegetables, a Korean chilli sauce and an egg. It is a great vegetarian option so I ordered this a lot in Korea! If you order dolsot-bibimbap (bibimbap served in a hot pot) at a restaurant, they usually break a raw egg over the vegetables and it cooks in the heat of the dish… but I fry my egg first and place […]

Day 19 FOOD- Part 2

So yesterday I did the big Food Part 1 post, mostly focused on breakfast, lunch and dinner. Today we carry on with Part 2… this time focusing on snacks, treats and drinks. I’m more of a savoury girl than a sweet one, so more often than not would opt for popcorn, pea flour crackers or walnut crackers over anything sweet. Sometimes even a fork full of kimchi! Proper Crisps have a couple of their chip flavours in home compostable packaging so on the odd, […]

Day 18 – FOOD Part 1

I love food… growing it, preparing, cooking and most of all eating it! I’ve already blogged about my marrow/ zucchini abundance and how I cooked and baked with it … but here is a dedicated lockdown FOOD post. Being vegetarian with a preference for a dairy free, wheat free diet and zero waste… some people have a hard time imagining what it is I actually eat! I can assure you I eat well and often. 🙂 Here’s a run down of some staples/ usual […]

Israeli Food & Markets

Part of the fun of traveling is eating out, discovering new dishes and buying food in the markets. The first thing we noticed in Israel was how expensive eating out was, so we tended to go for cheaper eats where we could. This may be why our experience of Israeli food was dominated by hummus and falafel! If you order ‘hummus’ on the menu it typically comes with pita bread and pickled vegetables and/or olives, sometimes with falafel and usually with small side salads. […]

Akhaltsikhe & Georgian Food

Rabati Fortress, Akhaltsikhe

We took a marshutka from Kutaisi to Akhaltsikhe and when we got off we were admiring the cars set up as hardware shops and were trying to work out which way to go to get to our hotel when a bustling woman approached us offering accommodation at her guesthouse. We had already booked a room a hotel so politely declined her offer. Not giving up she offered home cooked meals and a husband who could drive us to Vardzia and other places of interest […]
