Dubai

We explored Dubai the day after having walked all over Singapore. We only had about 3 hours sleep on the 8 hour flight (which arrived at 5am local time) so were a little sluggish but managed to stay awake most of the day! The metro/ train system is organised, easy to use and importantly nicely air-conditioned! It was quite amusing to sit with plenty of space in the women’s only section of the train and watch men crowd into their section, trying not to step over the pink line. More amusing was seeing the white male tourist sitting right amongst all the women quite oblivious to the rule!

We went first to Madina Jumeirah where they were busy preparing for the world government summit starting the next day. It was beautiful.

After waiting in the air conditioned bus shelter (!) we headed to the Dubai marina area with the cool curvy tower, had lunch then checked in at our lovely hotel which was super conducive to relaxing in the afternoon before heading to the Dubai mall/ Burj Khalifa for the dancing fountain light show in the evening.

All my gluten free, dairy free, refined sugar free aspirations went out the window in the presence of Cinnabon which featured for breakfast and dinner (along w yummy fresh mint & watermelon juice). Lunch was delish and much healthier- assorted salads from supermarket deli. 🙂

It was great to see this unique city – so modern, created in the desert, still undergoing huge development. But one day was enough and I’ve no pressing desire to visit again. Next stop – Iran.

About the Author

Born and bred in New Zealand's South Island, this Kiwi likes getting 'out there' exploring the world and its wonderful people! I have taught English in South Korea, volunteered in Kyrgyzstan, studied in Denmark, lived in community in Scotland and visited friends and wonderful people all over the world. Now married to Antony the adventures continue together. I have a habit of being notoriously behind in my blog - but will do what I can to record my adventures, as much for my own record as anything (as I have a terrible memory). After an amazing year in Iran and Europe, in 2016, Antony and I are off again September 29 2019 - Feb 1 2020. Hopefully I can blog about most of what we get up to! Enjoy the read! Kate x
